Acro (rate mode) does not self-level. Stick deflection sets a rotation rate; when you center the stick, the craft holds whatever attitude it has. That is why freestyle and racing live in Acro - and why beginners death-spiral the moment they flip the switch too early.
Angle mode is training wheels. Acro is the real control model. The goal is not to “quit Angle tomorrow”; it is to leave Angle when hover and landings are boring, then rebuild those skills in rate mode without panic throttle.
Acro vs Angle in one table

| Mode | Stick does | When centered |
|---|---|---|
| Angle | Commands attitude (tilt limit) | Self-levels toward upright |
| Horizon | Mix; flips possible | Soft self-level near center |
| Acro | Commands rate | Holds attitude; you level it |
If you release sticks in Acro while inverted or banked, the whoop stays wrong-side-up until you correct. That is the feature.
When to leave Angle
Switch only after this checklist is honest - not aspirational:
Ready for Acro when you can
□ Hover in Angle without constant wall kisses
□ Soft landings more often than not - [how to land](/blog/how-to-land-fpv-drone)
□ Arm / disarm without thinking - [how to arm](/blog/how-to-arm-fpv-drone)
□ Survive mild crashes without freezing on sticks

Rates before hero freestyle
Acro with pro freestyle rates on day one feels like the craft is angry. Start calm:
- Stock or beginner rates first - how to set FPV rates for beginners
- Add a little expo if stick center is twitchy
- Raise rates only after level hover and gentle rolls are clean

Acro drills (sim first, then whoop)
In the browser simulator, props cannot destroy furniture:
Sim Acro ladder
1. Level hover without Angle - tiny stick corrections
2. Gentle left / right rolls, recover to level
3. Gentle pitch forward / back, recover
4. Figure-eight at walking pace
5. Intentional 90° bank, recover without punching throttle
6. Practice disarm muscle memory after a “crash”Then repeat on a ducted whoop over carpet or soft outdoor grass. India apartment pilots: keep sessions short; noise and neighbors matter - flying in apartments and terraces.
| Drill | Pass criteria | Common fail |
|---|---|---|
| Level hover | 10 seconds without altitude panic | Over-correcting pitch/roll |
| Roll recover | Stops upright, not inverted | Holding roll stick too long |
| Soft landing | Touchdown, not bounce-slam | Chopping throttle to zero mid-air |
| Crash recover | Disarm, breathe, re-arm calmly | Throttle punch into the floor |
Failure modes (the death spiral)

| What happens | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Instant flip on arm | High rates + stick not centered | Center sticks; lower rates; check motor direction |
| Spiral into floor | Looking at props / ground, not horizon | Eyes on horizon line in goggles |
| Oscillation hover | Fighting Angle habits with huge inputs | Smaller sticks; more sim |
| “It won’t stay level” | That is Acro - you must hold it | Mentally own attitude |
| Panic punch-out indoors | Freestyle muscle memory too early | Throttle discipline drills |
Ducted whoops forgive furniture hits better than naked props, but they are not safe around kids or pets - spectator boundaries.
Goggle and radio habits that help
- Watch the horizon line, not the prop blur.
- Keep throttle movements smooth; altitude is your calm indicator.
- Confirm Mode 2 before blaming Acro - what is Mode 2.
- Failsafe should be configured before outdoor Acro - failsafe scenarios.
India flying context
Most new Indian pilots learn Acro on 1S whoops indoors or in calm parks, not on 5-inch freestyle. That is correct. Save field freestyle for when club space and rates are ready - which build first. Monsoon weeks are perfect for sim Acro hours.
Next skills after basic Acro
Once level hover and soft landings work in Acro:
- Gentle power loops and coordinated turns - how to learn freestyle
- Only then flips - how to do flips
- Crash less with discipline - how to reduce crashes
