Monsoon flying and storage in India
Monsoon is not "no fly season" for everyone — it is higher maintenance season. Water, humidity, and mud find every gap in your stack. Coastal cities (Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi) see salt air too; inland metros get sudden downpours that trap pilots mid-field. Plan for wet grass, fogged goggles, and LiPos that hate damp storage cupboards.
When to skip the field

Dry windows exist; use them with shorter sessions and faster post-flight wipe-down. Morning slots after overnight rain often mean soft ground — mud on electronics beats no rain in the sky.
Before you fly (monsoon prep)
Week before season:
□ Inspect XT60 / PH2.0 for green corrosion
□ Re-shrink exposed solder joints
□ Silica gel fresh in quad and battery bags
□ Props spare set sealed in zip bag
□ Domestic order props/arms — courier delays stack up
Day of:
□ Weather radar check (2-hour window minimum)
□ Zip bag for radio and phone in backpack
□ Microfiber for lens and camera dome
□ Towel for hands before touching battery plugs
□ Conformal coat on FC if you are comfortable — helps splash- Heat shrink on exposed solder joints; inspect connectors

During the session
- Keep LiPos in bag until just before flight — not on wet grass
- Land early if vtx or FC feels warm + humid — condensation inside stack is real on cheap seals

- Summer habits invert: heat is less brutal but humidity replaces it
After a wet or humid session
1. Power off, disconnect battery immediately
2. Remove props — spin motors by hand, feel for grit
3. Wipe frame, inspect vtx and RX pigtails for water beads
4. Tilt quad — drain water from arms if any pooled
5. Dry indoors 24h before charging if anything got wet
6. Check screws — wet carbon + vibe loosens hardware
7. Storage voltage packs — not full charge in sealed bagDo not blast compressed air into motors full of muddy water — wipe and dry first. Compressed air can drive moisture into bearings.

- Silica gel in battery and quad bags; replace when saturated (colour beads help)
- Storage voltage on LiPos — not full packs in a humid cupboard — LiPo safety
- Corrosion on XT60 pins — light contact cleaner and inspection; do not fly high-amp through green pins
Frame and carbon
Wet crashes hide stress cracks. Crash triage after hard mud landings — arms delaminate when wet flex meets torque. Carbon absorbs water over time if end caps are open — inspect arm tubes after repeated wet sessions.
Gear buying in monsoon
Bias domestic spares when courier delays stack up — import vs domestic. Stock props and arms before peak rain weeks; surface shipping already slow gets worse when highways flood.
Pincode note: rural and hill pincodes may lose 2–5 days in monsoon — order consumables early. GST invoice still matters if vtx arrives DOA in a wet box — warranty docs.

Treat monsoon like an off-season maintenance block with occasional dry-window flying — winter maintenance mindset, but wetter.
Goggle fog and lens care
Humidity fogs analog and HD lenses faster than vtx issues. Anti-fog wipes help; so does acclimating the goggle bag indoors before opening outside. Breathe away from foam on cold mornings — exhaled moisture condenses on the lens mid-pack.
Carry a microfiber in a zip bag, not loose in a muddy backpack. Scratches from grit cost more than a prop set.
Indoor monsoon alternative
When the field is mud for weeks, shift to legal indoor whoop time rather than forcing drizzle sessions. Society gym slots need permission — same spectator rules apply. Use monsoon to log sim hours and bench receiver wiring instead of corrosion roulette outdoors.
A pilot who maintains gear all monsoon and flies five dry-window packs beats one who flies twenty wet sessions and replaces a stack in August.
Society and terrace pressure
Monsoon pushes terrace pilots indoors — neighbours hear whoops through walls. Coordinate timing, keep sessions short, and charge in a dry room away from sleeping hours per apartment flying. Complaints in monsoon stick longer than in October when everyone is outdoors.
Rust on steel hardware
Steel screws and motor bells corrode faster in coastal humidity. Swap rusted hardware before it seizes — extracting a stripped rusted screw from carbon in August is worse than a ₹20 screw in July. Light oil on accessible steel, not on carbon joints.
