Warranty and DOA: how to document unboxing
Dead-on-arrival happens. What separates a swap from a fight is documentation you can send in one email — before you solder, flash, or rage-post. Indian shops often work in 48-hour to 7-day DOA windows; import sellers use dispute timers. The clock starts at delivery, not when you finally open the box after work.
Before you open the box
At the door:
1. Photo/video — sealed package, all sides
2. Shipping label readable (courier, AWB, date)
3. Note any box crush or re-tape
4. Screenshot order confirmation + invoice PDF
5. Start a folder: YYYY-MM-DD-orderid-product/- Video or photo of sealed package with shipping label visible
- Note courier and delivery date — some shops have 48-hour DOA windows
- Screenshot order confirmation and invoice with GST line items if present
If the outer carton is damaged, photograph before signing "received in good condition" on COD — carriers notice.
Unboxing sequence (five to ten minutes)
1. Wide shot — box exterior, any damage
2. Open — packing material, accessories laid out on clean surface
3. Inventory — compare to listing (antennas, cables, screws)
4. Serial numbers — radio, goggles, FC, vtx (close-ups, not blurry)
5. Power-up test — bench, smoke stopper, NO props
6. If failure — one continuous video: power on → symptom → off
7. Repack shot — how you will return if neededStore files in a dated folder: 2026-06-28-vtx-order-1234/. Cloud backup beats "photos on phone until I delete them."
Timeline cheat sheet
| Window | Action |
|---|---|
| 0–24 h | Full unboxing doc + bench test |
| 24–48 h | Open support ticket if DOA; include all attachments |
| 48 h – 7 d | Still email — many Indian shops honor if doc is clear |
| 7 d+ | Harder; manufacturer warranty may apply instead of DOA |
| Import dispute | Platform timer (e.g. 15 days) — do not wait for "weekend build" |
Rule: if it is expensive and electrical, bench test the day it arrives. "I opened it after two weeks" weakens every claim.
What shops actually need
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Tax invoice | GST and RMA eligibility |
| Serial matching invoice | Grey market detection |
| Proof of defect | Short video beats paragraphs |
| What you did not do | "Not soldered / not flashed" matters |
| Original packaging | Many RMAs require it |
Many policies void warranty after installation — read terms on buying checklist before the iron touches pads.
Common DOA symptoms and what to film
| Symptom | Film this |
|---|---|
| No power on stack | Smoke stopper LED, USB recognized or not, no magic smoke |
| Vtx no output | Table power, correct channel, antenna attached |
| Goggle no feed | Module seated, cable swap tried |
| Radio won't bind | RX LED pattern, correct firmware stated |
| Motor twitch one corner | Disarmed, spin by hand, compare to others |
One two-minute video saves ten WhatsApp voice notes.
Import orders
Cross-border RMA is slower. Document everything at receipt; contact seller within their window even if you think it is a loose cable. Import vs domestic — bias domestic when DOA speed matters.
Import ticket extras:
- English subject line with order ID
- Link to hosted video (Google Drive / YouTube unlisted) if attachment limit hits
- State country India and voltage if relevant
- Ask replacement vs refund — customs on second shipment may apply
Email template (keep it boring)
Subject: DOA request — Order #____ — [product name]
Order date:
Delivery date:
Invoice # / GSTIN:
Serial # (photo attached):
Issue: (no power / no video / bind fail / DOA motor)
Steps tried: (bench power, different cable, known-good vtx swap, etc.)
Not done: (not soldered / not flashed / not modified)
Attachments: unboxing photos, serial close-ups, test video link
Request: replacement / RMA authorization / prepaid return label
Thank you — happy to provide additional photos.Polite, factual, fast. Forums are for venting; support tickets are for swaps.
De-escalation if support pushes back
Pilot: "Video shows no 5V on bench with smoke stopper; pads untouched."
Shop: "Send to service center."
Pilot: "Policy page says 7-day DOA replacement; attaching invoice + video.
Please confirm RMA number before I solder for build this weekend."Stay factual. Threats of social media rarely beat clean documentation.
After a successful claim
Log which shop handled it well — that is worth more than ₹200 saved on a sketchy listing. Note response time and whether they prepaid return pickup. Restock spares from the Armory or that shop before the next build crunch.
GST invoice gaps that slow RMA
| Problem on invoice | Fix before you need RMA |
|---|---|
| Serial missing | Email seller same day of delivery |
| Product name vague ("FPV part") | Ask for SKU-specific line item |
| Wrong GSTIN on your account | Update profile before next order |
| COD without invoice in box | Download PDF from portal immediately |
Shops process hundreds of orders — your organized folder is what makes you the customer they help first.
COD and marketplace orders
Cash-on-delivery adds friction to DOA claims because couriers mark "delivered" before you test.
COD receipt habit:
1. Inspect outer box before paying — note damage on slip if allowed
2. Open within view of delivery if policy allows; photo crush immediately
3. Do not install until video complete — same as prepaid
4. Screenshot payment + order ID same day
5. If DOA, request pickup RMA before courier window closesMarketplace sellers with auto-confirm delivery timers treat silence as acceptance. Set a phone reminder for day of delivery: unbox and bench test, even if the build waits a month.
What voids warranty fastest
| Action | Typical policy result |
|---|---|
| Soldered RX to FC | "Installed" — harder DOA |
| Flashed FC before test | Blamed on firmware |
| Cut stock cables shorter | Modification |
| Removed serial sticker | RMA rejected |
| Mixed parts in return box | Delay or deny |
Bench test with smoke stopper, props off, original cables — then decide if the part stays in the build.
