How to carry FPV batteries when traveling
Traveling with LiPos is where hobbyists get surprised. Airline, railway, and courier rules change - verify the carrier policy for the trip you are taking. This guide is practical packing habit for FPV Grind readers, not legal advice. When in doubt, leave packs at home and buy or borrow at the destination.
Storage habits year-round: how to store LiPo batteries. India shipping reality: LiPo shipping rules - surface only.
Before you pack anything

□ Read airline / train / bus baggage rules for lithium batteries this week
□ Bring packs to storage voltage if they will sit
□ Inspect for puff, damage, or frayed leads - do not travel bad packs
□ Plan fire pouch / LiPo bag where allowed
□ Know whether destination can supply packs instead| Trip type | Usual FPV approach | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic flight | Many pilots carry small whoop packs in cabin when rules allow | Wh count limits; declare if required |
| Train / car | Easier physically; still protect from crush and short | Hot cars in Indian summer |
| Courier to yourself | Often surface-only for LiPo | Slow; paperwork; carrier refusals |
| International | Stricter - research per airline | Do not assume domestic habits transfer |
Storage voltage and state of charge
Packs that sit in luggage should be near storage, not fresh off the charger and not empty-abused. Full packs in a hot aircraft hold or summer boot are poor risk management. Empty-deep packs age badly and travel no safer.
| State | Travel fitness |
|---|---|
| Storage (~3.8V/cell typical) | Default for sitting / luggage |
| Fresh charged | Only if you fly same day and rules allow carry |
| Puffed / damaged | Do not travel - dispose per local safe practice |
| Mixed connector dump in one pouch | Short risk if leads kiss |
Charge and storage workflow: charge LiPos safely.
Physical packing
□ LiPo bag / fireproof pouch for the pack bundle
□ No loose packs next to keys, coins, tools, or spare screws
□ Cover or cap connectors (tape / bullet covers)
□ Soft buffer so frames and radios do not crush cells
□ Keep whoop 1S bricks in one labeled pouch - easy security inspection| Do | Do not |
|---|---|
| Cap connectors | Toss XT30/PH2.0 leads naked in a metal mug of bits |
| Use a pouch | Line the suitcase floor with loose packs |
| Carry documentation mindset | Argue policy you did not read |
| Restock domestically later | Ship LiPo “urgent air” and hope |
Courier vs carry-on realities (India)

Domestic air courier for LiPo is frequently restricted or refused. Surface/ground options are slower and still carrier-dependent - read LiPo shipping India. For a weekend club trip, carrying a small whoop 4-pack yourself (when passenger rules allow) beats shipping.
Flying to another city for a meet:
- Confirm airline lithium rules and Wh limits.
- Prefer fewer, known-good packs over a brick of mystery cells.
- Prefetch destination shop stock - shops and communities · the Bench for restock when you return.
Hot-car and monsoon notes
Indian summer: packs in a closed car bake. Bring the pouch indoors. Monsoon: dry packs before bagging; wet connectors corrode in transit. After travel, inspect before the first charge - do not charge a pack that took a crush in the hold.
Failure modes
| Mistake | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Full packs in hot luggage | Elevated risk / stress |
| Loose packs with tools | Short / spark |
| Assuming all airlines match | Gate surprise / confiscation |
| Shipping air “because Amazon is fast” | Rejection or policy violation |
| Traveling puffed packs “one last time” | Safety + trip ruined |
Not legal advice
Airline and courier LiPo rules are their own. Read the carrier policy for this ticket. Club event organizers sometimes publish pack guidance - follow the stricter rule when two policies conflict.
While packs sit at storage, keep skills warm on /sim. Build lists without guessing connectors in Grind Lab.
Bench
Restock 1S multipacks domestically: the Bench. Match BT2.0 / PH2.0 to your fleet before you travel with adapters you will lose.
